Take the most well known song from this album Sweet But Psycho, while it’s undeniably a big hit I’ve never been able to get into this track because there’s not really any personality too it. I bring these tracks up because I can see the potential in this album and in Ava Max as a vocalist, unfortunately the album is largely made of more generic songs that lack any real identity. I also like the song that follows on from it titled Torn which details a complicated relationship that’s reaching it’s breaking point and musically it’s a bit more complex than the rest of the album as there’s a few more musical elements that work together to create this more chaotic sound that works for the theme of the song. The techno vocals towards the end of the song aren’t great and the whistling vocals are a little annoying but the upbeat and positive feeling of the song and the carefree lyrics about living for yourself give the track an overall vibe I really like. There’s also Born To The Night which has this really uplifting feeling to it with this more low-key synth-heavy music that allows for the vocal performance to once again rise to the top of the mix. There’s also use of some more dreamy and atmospheric synths which pair well with the vocals and contrasts nicely with the more thumping beat. Not to mention the beat has this nice dance-pop quality too it and while this album really overuses a lot of similar beats this song has a lot more fluctuations to it, keeping it engaging. While not an original concept I think Ava makes it her own on the song, largely though her vocal performance which has a lot of passion and power to it. For example the track Naked is honestly a really good track that talks about a need to be seen and it uses sex and nudity as a metaphor for being emotionally open to someone.
However what we’ve eventually gotten from this debut is an album that I don’t feel really lives up to the lofty ambitions Ava Max had for this record.īefore I really get into why this album isn’t working for me though I want to just take a look at some of the tracks that I think do show the potential of Ava Max as a popstar. Ava herself also wanted the album to be an upbeat pop album with a lot of energy and feel-good tracks with no ballads.

However due to multiple delays the album got pushed further and further back until now where we finally have Heaven & Hell which is an album slip into two halves, those being the Heaven part of the album which takes up the first half followed by Hell in the second half. If you would like to hear more about why we love the debut record from Ava Max, click on the video below. So guessing by this album cover gingers are a representation of hell?Īva Max has been releasing singles for her debut album as far back as 2018 with her breakthrough single Sweet But Psycho which blew up on the charts across the world. It is what makes the difference between a random collection of songs and a record.

Nothing makes me happier than when I see an artist put the time and thought into an effort. From the album cover to the songs to the tracking of the songs, there is a theme that runs throughout the record. It is clear that much thought went into the Heaven & Hell record. Sometimes it feels like you get the same song over and over, and then other times it just feels like they just threw a bunch of random songs together with no thought or care. It’s not always easy for an artist to get it just right on a record. While Ava is able to define her style on the 15 songs that make up Heaven & Hell, each track has its own thing going on. It flows from the first song until the last. Ava Max Heaven & Hell is one of those albums that I loved on my first listen. There is stuff I absolutely love, and then there is some stuff I just don’t get. The world of pop can be a hit and miss realm for us. Ava came onto y radar when I first heard the song, “Salt.” I loved the tune and was instantly curious to hear more. Ava Max is a global pop star who has just released her first album, Heaven & Hell.
